How Quickly Could an Outbreak Spread?
An outbreak similar to the one released in Port Steward can happen very quickly. Let’s use this scenario:
One might think that if an undead couple were locked in their house, that there would be nothing to fear. I mean, They can’t exactly unlock the handle, twist the knob and open the door, right? In the case of those in The Port, that statement would be accurate. The undead roaming the streets have lost nearly all brain function, meaning that memories, reasoning and problem solving skills are as good as gone.
If this couple were drawn to some type of scene, their escape plan may become much more simple than you would think. Say the pulsating sound of a Mariachi performing the next house over caught their ear, this hypothetical couple would likely waste little time before crashing through the bay window in the living room. Since they are absent of reasoning, they wouldn’t hesitate do something in this fashion. The worst part, the shattering glass wouldn’t even be heard over the music.
Now that they are no longer confined to the home they are free to roam about the neighborhood. First stop, the party next door with their attention-grabbing music. This couple could easily launch a fatal attack on the four hanging out in the front yard within a minute or two. As they move on to the side yard, they could pick off two more. By the time they reach the back yard, taking out three more before anyone truly understands what’s happening is a possibility. Then as some run away and others rush in to help—at least two more can be at least, bitten. But by this time, which has only been four to five minutes since the escaped their house the four fatalities from the front yard have already risen. This foursome attacks the frenzied guests that are running away and should be capable of biting or fatally attacking one to two people each.
As the party-goers flee the house screaming and calling out for help, other neighbors rush to the scene in time for the two fatalities in the side yard to greet them with open jaws.
The ones with bites will either go home and attempt to treat themselves there, but most will likely head to the hospital—a building that is swarming with people for them to attack once the plague takes hold of them.
In this scenario, the time frame is approximately seven minutes. Seven minutes, for two zombies to multiply to at least nine and for nearly a dozen more to have suffered bites of varying severity. Here’s the real question—if only two zombies could do all this in seven minutes, what could nine zombies do in the next seven minutes and the seven minutes after that and so on?
